I’m 42 years old, born and raised in the heart of Charleston, South Carolina, where the smell of shrimp and grits mingled with the salt of the sea and the stories of three generations of cooks before me.
A Southern Start and a Cast-Iron Legacy
Cooking, for me, began with a cast-iron skillet and my grandma’s no-recipe recipes—those intuitive, soulful meals she whipped up by memory and instinct. She taught me that food is never just about flavor; it’s about feeling. I remember being ten years old, standing on a wooden stool, stirring gumbo for what felt like hours, just to get the roux right. She’d say, “Mac, it’s ready when it smells like home.” I never forgot that.
The Journey From Home Cook to Flavor Explorer
As I grew older, I started experimenting—adding a bit of smoked paprika where it wasn’t traditional, folding unexpected flavors into classic dishes. I trained briefly at a local culinary institute, but my real education came from potlucks, farmers’ markets, food trucks, and long, raucous dinner parties where someone always asked, “Can I get this recipe?” That’s how Flavivo was born—out of a desire to share not just meals, but the joy of making them.
